ArtD 150 EXERCISE 1:3

Photo Edit

Original Photo

I cropped the photo to make it long with the monkey. I changed the photo to black and white, then with another layer adjusted the color of the background and darkened the lower half of the photo to give a more ominous feel.

ArtD 150 - First Post

Frazetta

I have had a hard time getting back into the groove of blogging. So....

I'm getting a kick start with my digital class this semester (blogging is part of the criteria)... this is the first post friends. :)

A little about a Frazetta piece...

Frazetta is one of the influential illustrators I'm drawn to. Most people think of his paintings when they think of his art, but my favorite pieces are his ink drawings. The movement of his line work is what draws me. I believe this is one of the covers for the Tarzan series he worked on. This is about the time he really hit it big in the illustration world. I don't think the lettering is from him so I added just the drawing below. The lettering is a little too distracting from the art.

I love how he curves his drawing so it is moving and flowing. The way he doesn't connect lines is skilled and thought out. I'm also very fond of where he chooses to have the darkest darks and the lightest lights... simple and dynamic. His drawings have weight and movement- he is a skilled draftsman. You can tell he thinks about every aspect of the composition.

Self Portrait

Grimacing Man (Self-Portrait)
Léopold Boilly Reproduction

Silly Me
Self Portrait à la Léopold Boilly

This project was a lot of fun. I had to create a self portrait reproduction of a famous artist and then one of my own- inspired by that self portrait.

A little about why I chose Léopold Boilly:

"He meticulously recorded facial details and gestures, and his depictions of costumes and textiles are fascinating as a chronicle of fashion. Boilly's paintings and drawings, often tinged with humor, showcase the artist's witty interpretation of urban life." -www.getty.edu

My Adventures With Scratchboard

DREAMTIME

Two cockatoos becoming stars.

Rattlesnake Test

Small Flamingo

This semester I was able to play around with different styles and mediums...
We used scratchboards briefly. I like that scratchboard can be fast but it might be a while before I do any more...

In Class

These are portraits of some other students in my Head Drawing class.
We had to rotate about every 10 min to another student- in total these took roughly 30-40min each to finish. These are done with water soluble pencils on an 18x24 pad of sketch paper.
I haven't used these pencils before - I liked them!
I'm going to practice being bolder with them too....
They may be a new favorite to use in my sketchbook! :)
I only wish the students where lighted dramatically... we drew them without focused lights and I think the drawings would be more successful if we hadn't just used the current lighting in the classroom. Overall a fun experience!

Pastel

This was my latest attempt at pastels...
It was for an illustration project in school. I had to illustrate
"Aunt Matilda was always a bit odd"... (I think that was the line...)
I haven't worked with pastels so this was a very educating experience!
I find it pretty agitating but I know it has to do with my frustration with not knowing the materials. I'm going to do a little more research and some practice before I start another project. If you know of any good videos or books... leave a little note below... ;)

Watterson- Calvin & Hobbes

So this is the latest project I did for my Illustration class.
We had to do a popular figure with supporting characters portraying what they are known for and... make a money design!
Seems silly but I had fun with it. :)

I used microns and a brush to ink it... using LOTS and LOTS of dots! Ack! ;)
I'm not skilled with scanners (as you know) and the original is too big for my scanner. So I made a copy and scanned that... (I'll try to get a better quality pic up).
You can't see much of the detail and some of the black faded in the copy... but I wanted to share.

***
Update! - Watterson is sort of recluse and after Calvin & Hobbes he disappeared from the public.... But,... he's popped up somewhere.... HERE
